Bitumen Content Classification Uses

40% K1-40 Concrete curing, mist spraying, tack coating.

55% K1-55 Concrete curing, grass growing, grouting
patching, sealing, formation and sub-base,
surface dressing. Tack coating.

60% K1-60 Grouting, patching, sealing, formation and
sub-base, surface dressing.

70% K1-70 Surface dressings

POLYBILT -A mid polymer modified cationic emulsion, manufactured with B.P 'S Olexobit polymer modified bitumen. This material conforms to the roadnote 39 specification for intermediate polymer modified surface dressing binder.

FORTCOATE - A strong polymer modified surface dressing emulsion. It utilises the technology of BP's polymer modified bitumen.. This material conforms to the roadnote 39 table NG9/8 specification for premium surface dressing emulsions.

The addition of polymers to the bitumen emulsion improves the low temperature adhesion and elasticity.

Macadam Bonding
For domestic or private use we would recommend a standard 40 of 60 % tack coat. For the more heavily used works then we may recommend a modified tack coat. See below for more information. Supplied in 205 litre drums or in bulk. 20/25 litre containers can be supplied on request.

Polybond

A Polymer modified bond coat.

Sealants

Cold Seal Paint is supplied in 20 litre buckets for easy use. This product has various uses from crack sealing on driveways and pavements to painting on roofs to disallow the penetration of water. The main use for Cold Seal tends to be for sealing the vertical edges in trenches.

Hot Joint Paint comes in the same size packaging but the product is solid. It requires heating up in a bitumen boiler. Primarily used to seal up the edges of freshly laid tarmac. Hot Joint Paint is also available in red for red tarmac edges.

Oxidised bitumen

Also know as blown bitumen, it is used in the roofing industry to seal the felt to the roof. Requires heating. Supplied in paper kegs

Pot hole repair

Easypatch – is a patching material which is applied cold – there’s no need for hot asphalt, Easypatch can be applied to any shape hole, and needs no compacting, allowing for a quick cost effective & user friendly solution for both domestic and highway repairs.

DIY Macadam

As its called, DIY Macadam, its just that. Supplied in 25kg bags, its uses are endless. It can be used to repair potholes, make up new pavements, areas that will not receive too much traffic or have a good base and it can be used to just reinstate existing paths/pavements.

Anti-Skid Over Banding Materials
Anti-Skid is used in areas that breaking is required such as approaches to junctions or roundabouts, pedestrian crossings or normal traffic lights. Other areas that require good tyre grip is on sharp bend or steep slopes. Of course, it doesn't have to be used on roads alone, it’s also used on steps and disabled access ramps. Requires heating. Supplied in 20litre buckets

Poppy Red and Black Slurry Seal
Ideal for central reservations, footways, cycle ways and driveways. Once mixed with sand in a drum type cement mixer, will give you a better look and get longer life out of the existing surface. Supplied in 20litre buckets or 205litre open top drums.

Liquid Red RR3 – For addition to Macadam’s and Asphalts

This product contains a high level of pigment suspended in a solvent hydrocarbon medium.

Advantages:

Easier to control than powder, so less waste and contamination.
Requires a shorter mixing time than dry powder.
Suitable for pumping at ambient temperature.
Easier to control levels of liquid red from a console.
Saves on binder. 1.5-2.0 kg less required for every 10kg if liquid red used.
Purpose built storage tanks to hold materials are available.
Supplied in pre-weighed low melt bags or specially designed 2 tonne portable tanks.
Fully automated system can be designed.

The Road Emulsion Association Limited

The Road Emulsion Association Ltd (REAL) is a fairly old trade Association, dating back to the 1st December 1928. It was then called the British Association of Road Emulsion Manufacturers (BAREM), in 1930 it was renamed The Road Emulsion and Cold Bituminous Roads Association (RECBRA), In 1947 it was renamed yet again to the present Road Emulsion Association Limited
The current purpose and aims of REAL is to promote the interests of it's members, who manufacture and supply Bituminous Emulsion materials. Currently we have eight representatives of major producers or suppliers of Bituminous road emulsion materials sitting on our Council. Our Council meetings are held 4 times a year.

In addition we are very fortunate in having a very experienced Technical Committee, made up of senior technical staff from our constituent member firms. Some of our senior technical committee members not only participate in the dissemination and consideration of technical issues and enquires related to the work and promotion of the Association, but they are also active in BSI Committees and CEN Committees.

The Association has strong objectives in relation to the provision and use of high quality materials. Because of this ALL our member Companies are Quality Assured to BS EN ISO 9002.

Bituchem Asphalt Ltd
From their manufacturing base in Gloucestershire, Bituchem Asphalt produce a range of aesthetic surfacing materials and traditional bituminous based asphalt’s for hard landscape paving solutions. The Naturatex and Colourtex brands are supplied throughout the country and now into international markets. Bituminous asphalt’s to BS4987 and 594 are available locally along with Stone Mastic Asphalt’s and bond coats in both black and red.

Products
Natratex and Colourtex are based on tried and tested asphalt technology achieving similar performance properties but utilize a unique clear binder system and high performance decorative aggregates to achieve naturally coloured or pigment enhanced finishes.

Natratex and Colourtex can be used for new construction or for overlays on site refurbishments. Both product ranges are aesthetic, environmentally safe, substantive and durable, forming part of the structural layer of the pavement design.

Supplied through a network of accredited surfacing contractors, Natratex and Colourtex can be installed throughout the year as an alternative to block paving, asphalt, surface dressings or cold applied epoxy finishes. *See below for Important Information regarding these products.

Natratex is the 'flagship' of our product range here at Bituchem Asphalt. It combines the key ingredients from our other hard landscaping products to form a durable, fully bonded, natural aggregate wearing course with a selection of natural gravels to choose from. Flexible in terms of its usage, Natratex has been used for a number of different purposes both in the public and domestic sectors.

A specially formulated clear binder is used to bond natural aggregates, producing a durable fully bonded yet natural looking surface. An extensive variety of natural aggregates is available which can be used with a clear binder to give a long lasting, natural looking surface. This allows the architect/designer to blend necessary hard landscape areas with immediate architecture and surroundings. With the clear binder, Natratex is both environmentally sympathetic and durable.

As there is no pigment used in the clear binder the original colours of the aggregate are retained through the life of the surface. Different types of aggregates can be specified to satisfy individual design requirements, for roads, footpaths, driveways, playgrounds car parks and other areas.

Bituchem Asphalt - Colourtex
Bituchem Asphalt's Colourtex is a highly versatile surfacing product and offers a durable and hard wearing surface in a wide range of vivid, long lasting colours. A greater emphasis for colour has enabled Colourtex to become one of the most popular and reliable coloured surfaces within the surfacing sector. This particular product enables customers to highlight certain areas of their project by employing different colours. Such coloured surfaces have proven to be especially effective in leisure areas or where there is a need to clearly
delineate one section from another.

The wide range of colours available in the Colourtex portfolio are made possible by using a clear binder in the manufacturing process. This ensures strong and highly durable colours which are difficult to obtain when mixing colour pigments with black bitumen. Furthermore, complimentary coloured aggregates are used in order to achieve long lasting colour throughout the product life of Colourtex.

In terms of its usage, Colourtex epitomizes the flexibility of the Bituchem Asphalt range where it has been used both in the public and domestic sectors. It has proved popular for supermarket car
parks with Sainsbury, Safeway and Waitrose all using Colourtex. More recently, the product has also been used on domestic driveways, as well as carriageways, parks, car parks cycleways and areas of demarcation.

The development of Chiptex is largely the result of changing demands within the hard landscaping market where appearance is now considered to be of paramount importance. Our company prides itself on its ability to keep in touch with customer thinking and this has enabled us to remain among the market leaders in the hard landscaping industry.

Chiptex uses clear pre-coated chippings and the natural colours of these aggregates soften the appearance of the surface when used with conventional black materials. The gravel is held in place with a clear binder which enables the chippings to retain their natural appearance and, as with all of our products, the normal problems associated with loose chippings are alleviated.

The durable wearing course of the product ensures that Chiptex has the durability and product life associated with traditional black asphalts. In addition, this versatile surfacing solution is particularly appropriate in environmentally sensitive areas where the product has to match with its immediate surroundings.
